It uses advanced compression (HEVC) to store photos at half the size of JPEG while maintaining the same quality. The problem: many websites, Windows PCs, and older software do not recognize .heic files. Converting HEIF to JPG solves this compatibility issue instantly.
The conversion from HEIF to JPG is near-lossless when quality is set high. JPG is supported by every browser, email client, and image viewer in existence. For sharing photos on social media, emailing, or uploading to legacy systems, JPG remains the safest choice. The tradeoff is file size — JPG will be larger than the source HEIF.

HEIF uses more efficient compression than JPG. When converting to JPG, you will see a small file size increase at the same quality level. High-quality JPG settings preserve nearly all visible detail.
Apple adopted HEIF in iOS 11 to save storage space. HEIC files are about half the size of equivalent JPGs. You can change this in Settings > Camera > Formats, but conversion tools remain useful for compatibility.
